Kris Pannecoucke – Performers of Kinshasa

Photographer Kris Pannecoucke has portrayed street artists/performers in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Inspired by the film SYSTEM K, that also will be shown at Intonal, he wanted to dig deeper into the harsh world of the street artists, creating and living their life on and of the polluted streets. True artists of survival creating costumes from trash and provoking those in power through their art.

Kinshasa is ‘the city of survival’ and if you have no other means, art is an exceptional way to expose abuses. Dolls found in rubbish dumps, radio parts and discarded flip-flops are among items used to create these surreal costumes by Congolese artists highlighting political and environmental issues.

Artists in the exhibition: Shaka Fumu Kabaka, Sarah, Gires Kanda Gk, Arnold Dumbi, Pape Noir, Lioyolo, Falonne Mambu, Duda, Junior Nobiko, Etabe & Jared.

Opening reception April 21, 17.00–19.00
