otay:onii
otay:onii (Lane Shi) is a multifaceted artist originally from Haining, China, previously nesting in New York and currently based in Berlin. Her artistic practice spans across music, performance, installation, and film composition, winning her a spot as part of the SHAPE+ platform.
Shi’s work has received recognition and accolades, including the bronze prize for "Best Female Vocalist" from Global Music Awards, and "Best Sound" from the Audiovisual Arts Industrial Incubator Awards. Performance pieces like Unwrap! at the Ming Contemporary Art Museum exemplify her concept of "bio instruments." Through performances at Harvard University and festivals like CTM and Roadburn Festival, she navigates profound discussions, from humor to the poignant realities of third-world immigrants, sharing the rooted eastern perspectives to the western world in an attempt to bridge divides.
Her acclaimed albums – including NAG (2018), MíngMíng 冥冥 (2021), and Dream Hacker (2023) – defy conventional structures and emphasize philosophies extracted from lived experiences. Her most recent release, 2024’s, True Faith Ain't Blind, challenges established norms between classical and metal with acoustic piano and voice. A believer in echoes and, "solving a puzzle with another puzzle that can't be seen or touched, but felt," her emotional conviction radiates whether solo, as the frontwoman for a band of metal comrades, or as part of Florentina Holzinger’s outrageous performance ensemble.
