Maria Spivak
The Cyprus-based musician and sound artist plays with the nuances and poetics of pop with themes alluding to her myth-inspiring heritage in a folk-tinted voyage of esoteric explorations. She constructs her sound using analogue apparatus, a sign of her appreciation for the timelessness of classic machines, while also delving into the brave new world of technology. Her debut LP, Met'a To P'eib = Μετά Το Ρέιβ, released on Ecstatic in 2020, is chiaroscuro blend of hypnagogic pop, smudged synths, and ambient electronics infused with the spirit of a DIY scene where the ancient and futuristic co-exist. As such, her live performances jump from intimate sonic liturgies to bursts of energetic and often deconstructed ‘90s inspired techno. With lyrics rotating effortlessly from Greek to English, you may recognize her voice from Jay Glass Dubs’ acclaimed 2020 track, “Our Reversed Uniforms”.
