Ellen Arkbro w/ Microtub presents clouds for three tubas

World Premiere

Swedish composer and sound-artist Ellen Arkbro is celebrated for her work using precision-tuned intervallic harmony in compositions for acoustic instruments, for synthetic sound, and for combinations of both. In all of her work, Arkbro focuses on the qualities of harmonic sound that reveal listening as an active process of creative participation, inviting the listener to gradually transform into the sound itself.

In the world premiere of clouds for three tubas, commissioned by Intonal, Arkbro presents a new work composed specifically for Microtub – the only microtonal tuba trio in the world, which consists of Robin Hayward, Peder Simonsen, and Martin Taxt. In Arkbro’s own words: “This piece, just like most of my work, focuses on slowly unfolding patterns of chords, intervals, and timbral textures. One thing that interests me about working with harmony in just intonation is that many sounds can lock into each other in interaction, sonically fuse, and give rise to harmonic blends, textures, and shapes that are not possible to produce without attending very carefully to intonation and harmonic stability. This also opens up new ways of hearing sound in, and as, space that go far beyond listening to sound as an acoustic phenomena in the usual sense.”
