William Basinski with

Malmö Symfoniorkester

MSO Möter William Basinski

The renowned avant-garde composer meets MSO for the world premiere of the orchestral rendering of The Disintegration Loops V at MSO’s home of the Malmö Live concert hall. Created in the aftermath of 9/11, this 32-minute piece – part of his epic, four-disc masterwork The Disintegration Loops – captures Basinski’s iconic blend of hypnotic minimalism and profound emotion, serving as both a sonic elegy and a meditation on memory and loss. The evening also features Basinski himself performing on electronics selections from his album September 23rd, highlighting his continual evolution as a groundbreaking artist.

This monumental concert marks the world premiere of The Disintegration Loops V, performed live for the first time by Malmö Symfoniorkester. Basinski’s music, praised by Pitchfork, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, is rarely performed with a symphony orchestra. This concert offers audiences a rare opportunity to witness a world-famous experimentalist in collaboration with one of Sweden’s leading orchestras, creating a singular and deeply moving musical experience.

A cult figure in the ambient scene, Basinski has spent nearly 50 years crafting some of the most poignant and experimental soundscapes of our time. The Disintegration Loops received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork. The Temporary Residence deluxe LP box-set reissue from 2012 was awarded best re-issue of the year and a score of 10 on Pitchfork. Installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums internationally, and his concerts are presented to sold out crowds around the world. Basinski was chosen by music director, Antony Hegarty (Anohni/Antony and the Jonhsons) to create music for the Robert Wilson opera, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011, toured Europe in 2012, North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queen Elizabeth Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva, Switzerland, Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart Tasmania and now in Malmö.
