For 41 years, the British group has tested and explored the edges of known music both in recording and performance with an approach to composition that defies description.
Though wilfully obscure, their music – instrumental, non-song based, derived from an eclectic mix of electronic and acoustic instruments, and infused with field recordings – has a dedicated international audience. They have released over 20 albums, featured in the catalogues of Mute Records, Staalplaat, Soleilmoon Recordings, alt.vinyl, and their own Charrm label. Over recent years they have worked extensively with contemporary dance companies, and have been commissioned to compose soundtracks for new works by Karas (Japan), Zero Visibility Corp (Norway), Nye Carte Blanche Danseteater (Norway), balletLORENT (UK), and for award-winning productions by Random Dance Company (UK).
Their influential approach to album packaging manifested itself most recently with the album, Patina Pooling, a collaboration with Illinois-based Fossil Aerosol Mining Project consisting of a double LP packaged in a folded sheet of 0.9 mm gauge steel.
