The Swedish organisation for composers and sound artists who define themselves as women, non-binary, or transgender people present a concert by the Iranian musician, researcher, and sound artist.

Konstmusiksystrar (Sisters in Contemporary Music) was founded in 2014 by Marta Forsberg and Lo Kristenson and its members form a platform for a new generation of contemporary music. The Konstmusiksystrar website, with its ever-expanding list of composers and sound artists, functions as a vital resource for anyone interested in diversifying the commissioning and curating of contemporary new music.

Farzaneh Nouri, aka Farzané, is interested in experimental approaches to sound, science, and technology, exploring various disciplines, such as electroacoustic music composition, computer science, cybernetics, acoustic ecology, and linguistics. As tools in her artistic practice, she uses creative coding, field recording, and live electronics, as well as acoustic and programmable instruments. Her recent pieces investigate complex systems, natural algorithms, and human-machine interaction. She composes for live performances, interactive installations, films, VR, and multi-sensory experiences. The focus of her current research is on artificial intelligence methods in the framework of live electroacoustic music improvisation. Farzaneh has been a member of The Iranian Female Composer Association (IFCA) since 2020.

Artist talk

What is it like to be part of the first generation of active Iranian female composers?
How can organisations like Iranian Female Composer Association (IFCA) and Konstmusiksystrar work to strengthen female and non-binary artists and increase the sense of community between composers?
How can we work together to create sustainable platforms in contemporary music which fosters diversity and creativity (for real, not like fancy words)?

Konstmusiksystrar (Sisters in Contemporary music) is a Swedish organisation supporting and promoting women, trans and non-binary sound artists.

For the Intonal festival, Konstmusikmusiksystar has invited the composer Farzané to make a new work which will have its world premiere on 30th of April. Before the concert, Farzané will speak about her practice and the work of IFCA with Anna Jakobsson, executive leader of Konstmusiksystrar.

Farzané (Farzaneh Nouri) was born and studied in Iran. She is based in the Netherlands where she is currently finishing her thesis on artificial intelligence methods in the framework of live electroacoustic music improvisation. Since 2020, Farzané has been a member of The Iranian Female Composers Association (IFCA).

IFCA was established by the composers Anahita Abbasi, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Aida Shiraz in 2017. A lack of community between the first generation of active Iranian female composers became evident and ultimately resulted in the creation of IFCA. The organisation currently has more than 40 composers as its members who live and work across the globe. Designed to enrich the community of contemporary art and music, IFCA’s mission is to empower Iranian female and non-binary musicians and artists by fostering originality, honoring diversity, and strengthening equality.

Konstmusiksystrar was founded in 2014 by Marta Forsberg and Lo Kristenson, who at the time were studying composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. The Konstmusiksystrar website, with its ever-expanding list of composers and sound artists functions as a vital resource for anyone interested in diversifying the commissioning and curating of contemporary new music. Together the Konstmusiksystrar members form a platform for a new generation of contemporary music.
